You apply conversation techniques in order to communicate as effectively as possible with your conversation partner. It seems like a paradox, but by connecting well with the other person you are better able to steer the conversation in the direction you want. In our two-day training you learn to consciously determine your strategy and conversation techniques to achieve your goals, making conversations more pleasant, more effective and more efficient.

Conversation Techniques Course

Would you like to improve your general conversation technique so that you become more proficient in conducting and directing conversations? Whereas our training course Communicative Skills is much more about your own way of communicating and expressing yourself, conversational techniques are about using your way of communicating to be able to connect with your conversation partner. It seems like a paradox, but by connecting well with the other person, you are better able to steer the conversation in the direction you want.

The common thread is the iceberg theory: under water and above water. If we want to show effective behaviour above water, it is important to know how that behaviour comes about under water (or not). What is going on under water that prevents us from showing certain behaviour above water?

In the training on Conversation Techniques you learn to become aware of your own qualities and pitfalls and what effect these have on the course of a conversation. You learn to clearly see the goal of a conversation, so you can consciously determine your strategy and conversation techniques to achieve this goal. By sharpening your skills, your conversations will be more pleasant, effective and efficient.


During the training the following topics, among others, will be discussed:

  • Refresher on the way we communicate:

    How does the communication process work and what pitfalls are lurking?

  • Verbal, non-verbal and paralingual communication:

    What do you say literally, what do you do with your body, how does your voice sound and what effect does this have on a conversation?

  • The Iceberg Theory:

    Concrete observable behaviour (visible to everyone) lies above the water surface. How this behaviour comes about and what motives and drives play a role in it lie below the surface and are not directly observable

  • Steering a (goal-oriented) conversation: goal, technique and strategy:

    In every conversation, you pursue a goal, for example giving bad news, giving feedback or giving your opinion. To achieve this goal, you map out a strategy and use techniques. Which strategy and which techniques will best help you achieve this goal?

  • Listening and conversation skills:

    For example: attentive posture, summarising, questioning, reflecting on feelings

  • From message to process: interaction during a conversation:

    Insight into communication on a content and relationship level

  • Connecting with your interlocutor:

    Being attentive and sensitive to the other person's world of experience and frame of reference

  • Dealing with emotions and resistance:

    Recognising resistance in yourself and others and how to deal with it


  • You are aware of your own qualities and pitfalls and what effect this has on the course of a conversation;
  • You can use the right techniques to achieve your goal;
  • You are able to regain and maintain control in the conversation and know how to steer a conversation;
  • You know how to recognise your own resistance and that of others and how to deal with it, and
  • You listen carefully to your interlocutor and have an eye for their frame of reference, so that misunderstandings can be avoided.

Target group

This training is ideally suited if you have many conversations and would like to sharpen your skills to make these conversations more pleasant, effective and efficient. Do you recognise yourself in one or more of the points below?

  • You want to prevent a conversation from being derailed by high emotions
  • You want to learn to listen to the other person better

Of course, this list is not exhaustive: after all, everyone is different. What do you want to pay attention to within the theme of conversation techniques?

Working method

  • Customisation is our focus: through a telephone intake interview, the trainer makes an inventory of your personal learning goals. On this basis, the definitive programme of the training course is determined.
  • We believe a safe training atmosphere is important, as you should feel comfortable experimenting with new knowledge and skills.
  • We strongly believe in doing and experiencing, rather than talking about the content of trainings, which is why all our trainings are active in nature.
  • In order to guarantee the quality of the training, we apply a maximum group size of eight participants, so that we can guarantee the learning effect and efficiency.


The training is provided in Dutch as standard. The trainer has a good command of the English language. Use can be made of course material in English. With a minimum of three participants, the training can also be provided entirely in English.


Prices mentioned are per person, including course material. Lunch is included in the on-site training.

The training lasts 4 sessions of 3 hours, spread over 4 weeks.
