Course SQL Continuation

For data retrieval, database systems often use the SQL language. One of the most widely used database systems for professional users is MS SQL Server. For this system, additional SQL commands have been created in the form of T(ransact)-SQL. Among other things, T-SQL offers the possibility of extending the query with local variables and procedural programming. The latter includes, for example, logical tests such as IF.. ELSE... or WHILE. are among the commands. In addition, there are certain common commands that have been upgraded within T-SQL in order to improve their functionality and therefore their use.

In our two-day SQL Continuation course, after a review of the most commonly used basic concepts, we will dive deeper into the possibilities that SQL and T-SQL offer to create queries in order to retrieve the necessary data from the database. At the end of the course, you will be able to use the unique features of T-SQL such as variables, transactions and procedural programming.

  • Repetition of Basic SQL:
  • Sort data (ORDER BY)
  • Filtering data (WHERE, comparison operators, BETWEEN)
  • Advanced filters (AND, OR, IN NOT)
  • Filtering using wildcards (LIKE)
  • Calculated fields (concatenate)
  • Adjust data with functions (ROUND, LTRIM, RTRIM, DATEPART)
  • Summarise data (COUNT, SUM, AVG, MAX, MIN)
  • Grouping of data (GROUP BY, HAVING)

  • Retrieve data from multiple tables with joins (INNER JOIN, LEFT OUTER JOIN, RIGHT OUTER JOIN, Composite JOIN, Non-equi JOIN)
  • Using sub-queries (IN, e.g. search against previous order, running aggregate)
  • Using table expressions (derived tables, alias, variables, WITH)
  • Combining queries (UNION, INTERSECT, EXCEPT)
  • Advanced techniques (Window functions OVER, PARTITION, LAG, LEAD, Pivoting)
  • Data modification (INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, MERGE, OUTPUT), Export to Excel
  • Programmable objects (Variables, Batch, IF, ELSE, WHILE, cursors, procedures, triggers)

The training is intended for users of Microsoft SQL Server. The training is suitable for database users who already have a reasonable grasp of basic SQL and now want to get more out of MS SQL Server, but also for functional administrators and data analysts who want to learn to use unique features of T-SQL such as variables, procedural programming and transactions.
